What are anxiety disorders?

Anxiety is like a slow poison that takes toll on the sufferer’s mental and overall wellbeing slowly but surely. It usually surfaces when an individual gets too stressed about their daily issues and problems. So, to answer the question- “what are anxiety disorders?” through this small yet effective piece, we aim to educate you a little more on this crucial matter- so that you can take your mental health routine to next level!

Types of anxiety disorders:

  • Panic disorder- Panic disorder can be explained as a kind of anxiety disorder wherein numerous repeated episodes of unexpected fear, chest pain, excessive sweating, incomparable distress, etc. might surface, all at once.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder- GAD is yet another form of anxiety. In this, although there might not even be a cause, the sufferer experiences excessive tension and extreme anxiety.
  • Social anxiety disorder- Also known as social phobia, this is one of the most common forms of anxiety disorders out there. Researches show that one in four people already suffer from this anxiety disorder. It makes them overly self-conscious about their everyday actions and speeches around other people.
  • Two more types are- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Post-Traumatic stress Disorder. And both of them are just what their names suggest.

What are the common causes of the disorders?

Common causes:

  • Brain chemistry- Psychologists say that many anxiety disorders occur due to misalignments of hormones and electrical signals in the brain.
  • Leaving behind an addictive substance- Withdrawal from such illicit substances can also cause anxiety disorders among people.
  • Environmental factors- Difficulties at work, relationship issues, or intra-family problems
  • Genetics- Research suggests that people who have or have had family members with an anxiety disorder are more likely to experience the same themselves.
  • Medical factors- Symptoms of some other disease, the effects of your ongoing medication could also cause anxiety.

Symptoms:

Although the most common of all the symptoms of anxiety disorders is excessive fear, following are other significant and relevant symptoms people suffering from anxiety disorders face.

  • Feeling faint or dizzy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry mouth
  • Sweating
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Apprehension and worry
  • Restlessness
  • Distress
  • Fear
  • Numbness or tingling
